Work-in-Progress Papers (WIP)

Work-in-Progress Papers (WIP)

Virtual presentation instructions are now available!

New this year, WIP papers will be published as 1-page extended abstracts in IEEE Xplore.

The WHC2021 Organizing Committee solicits Work-in-Progress (WIP) papers to document late-breaking and preliminary results, due on April 26th (shortly after the technical paper acceptance notification on April 16th).  Authors are invited to share results in the form of a 1-page extended abstract to be published alongside technical papers in the IEEE conference proceedings and IEEE Xplore.  The organizing committee recognizes that the pandemic has made it difficult to conduct research involving human participants in the past year.  Thus the option to publish (and subsequently cite) a 1-page paper is intended to provide a forum for presenting results that may be preliminary with respect to the usual standards for replicability and statistical significance in experimental results involving human participants. Nevertheless, reporting of data to support hypotheses, or simulation and analytical results to support models or claims are expected to appear in the report, with appropriate schematics, diagrams, and graphics. While requiring less detail, WIP papers will still be held to a high standard of impact and interest to our audience.

WIP Submission and Review Process

Transferring copyright to IEEE and publishing the one-page extended abstract will not preclude publishing the same study as a conference or journal paper in other venues after the work is appropriately extended. However, the WIP paper should constitute the first appearance of the work, and a similar extended abstract should not appear elsewhere.  All accepted WIP papers will be invited to present at interactive poster sessions and compete for the “most promising WIP” award.  Authors will receive feedback in the form of at least two reviews and will be expected to revise their submission based on these reviews.  A single-blind review process will be used and therefore submissions do not need to be anonymized.  Please submit your WIP papers through PaperPlaza. You should find IEEE World Haptics Conference 2021 in the list and select “Submit a contribution to WHC 2021”. The formatting templates can be found below.

Virtual Presentation Instructions

Upload Deadline: June 25, 2021

Your Work-in-Progress (WIP) Paper will be presented during an Interactive Session in which you will be able to discuss your work with attendees in your personal videoconferencing room. Your pre-recorded video presentation will be available on-demand for attendees.

To get ready for your virtual presentation, we ask that you prepare the following materials and upload them to the virtual conference platform (X-CD):

▪ A pre-recorded video presentation (MP4): Your video presentation must be prepared following these guidelines, and therefore include both a voice over and captions. Please present your work as you would at an in-person conference with a full-screen screencast of your slides and a picture-in-picture video of yourself. Your video presentation must not exceed 1 minute. To upload your pre-recorded video presentation to X-CD, use the “Record/Upload Presentation” feature as described in the upload instructions.

Supporting content (PDF): Please prepare supporting content to assist discussions during your Interactive Session. This could, for example, be a set of slides or a video that you will screen-share during your videoconference to explain your work. This content will also be made available on-demand. To upload your supporting content on X-CD, use the “Additional Presentation Files” feature as described in the upload instructions.

▪ Poster (PDF): Please prepare a visual document that will be shown in the Poster Hall of X-CD. This visual document can be a traditional poster or any other content that can represent your work visually, such a slide or set of slides, a picture, your supporting content, or your manuscript. This document must be in PDF format. We recommend using the title slide of your presentation video. If this document is missing, your WIP paper will not be shown in the Poster Hall. To upload your Poster on X-CD, use the “Poster Upload” feature as described in the upload instructions.

▪ WIP Paper manuscript (PDF): Please download a copy of your manuscript from PaperPlaza and upload it to X-CD. To upload your manuscript, use the “Manuscript File” feature as described in the upload instructions.

NOTE: If your submitted manuscript on PaperPlaza included a video file, a YouTube link will be added to your presentation card on X-CD by the conference organizers.

Please see our resources page for the conference logo and zoom backgrounds that can be used for your materials and your presentations.

Please have all required materials, including your pre-recorded video presentation, uploaded to the virtual conference platform by June 25, 2021.

Note that only one author can act as presenter, upload content to the virtual platform and participate in the Interactive Session. The presenter must be a registered attendee of the conference. The presenter will be assumed to be the corresponding author for the submission, as indicated on PaperPlaza. If you would like a different author to be the presenter, please fill out this form as soon as possible.
